Mapping on the Web -- Update

It's always dangerous to state that something is or is not available on a specific website. This is especially true if you are talking about Google.

In the newsletter we just sent out we said that Mapquest allows you to reroute yourself after getting directions. In contrast, we said, "Google will allow you to specify a non-highway route as an option , but that's the limit of its flexibility." We knew this was true because we had checked Google within the last couple of days. We should have checked within the last couple of hours.

As of today, Google offers a similar feature, but characteristically, Google's version takes the technology one big step further: Google allow you to restructure your route by dragging and dropping sections of the route with your mouse.

This is a feature worth playing with. We've tried several routes we've used before, and Google's software is very intuitive and easy to work with.

One of our fast-reading readers already sent us a note pointing out that AAA's website has a feature that is similar to Mapquest's but the AAA site will create a series of detailed pages for the route. It's the electronic equivalent of what older folks may remember as the AAA TripTik that AAA members once got on that ancient medium, paper. Thanks Ruth.

And while we're thanking readers, thanks go to Joe Muise for the pointer to Mozy.com in the newsletter issued earlier today.
