Welcome to the April 2007 issue of the CyberArtisans monthly newsletter! Yep, we missed the March issue. Can you spell "pneumonia?"

Our goal is to present information that will be useful to you as a website owner and as a user of the web. If these newsletters are useful, please forward this to a friend. To unsubscribe, follow the directions at the bottom of this email.

    Maps on Your Website

Putting a customized map on your website, or linking to one, has just become easier, thanks to Google. Note that we said "easier," not "easy."

Google has provided developers with an Application Programming Interface, or API. This is a fancy way of saying that Google is giving developers limited access to Google's internals, allowing them to add notations, paths, and other useful map features that Google doesn't supply already. Google has also provided extensive documentation so no web developer can complain about lack of information, although one could make a case for too much information.

If you're interested in finding out more about this (or you want your webmaster to find out more about it), go to this page of the GCN website.

GCN, incidentally, is Government Computer News, and if you ever want to know what your government is doing in the field of computers, this is the place to go.

If you want to add a customized map to your website, contact us.

    Robots.txt Files

Does your site have a robots.txt file? If not, it should. The larger the site, the more you need it. Very simply, a robots.txt file tells the search engines what to look at and, more importantly, what not to look at on your site. Why is this important?

Search engine "spidering" can amount to a significant number of hits for some websites. If you have pages that are not useful for the search engines, such as pages generated by a database or a search function, use the robots.txt file to tell the search engines to skip those pages. This will decrease the load on your server and may increase the response time of your site.

Would you believe there is an entire website devoted to robots.txt files? But be forewarned: unless you're a true geek, this is the ultimate in boring websites.

If you don't want to read all that boring stuff but worry that it may contain something that applies to your website, contact us. We read stuff like this. We can tell you if you need a robots.txt file, and we can build it and put it up on your site.

    Quote for the Day

"The most likely way for the world to be destroyed, most experts agree, is by accident. That's where we come in; we're computer professionals. We cause accidents." - Nathaniel Borenstein.
